Abstracted from an internet written guide. This is something which we could undertake ! NOTE: There is no suggested date for this trip at this time.

Dominated by the oldest inhabited castle in Europe, the country towns of Windsor and Eton make an easy excursion from London. Windsor Castle has been the scene of many hauntings but since the majority of these are in areas that are inaccessible to the public, overed are only those that can be seen from the town itself.

Eton is the home to England’s top public school, Eton College. Its High Street is lined with delightful buildings from all ages, and there are numerous dark and sinister alleyways that lead to some extremely spooky back streets.

Highlights of the walk include a stroll through Windsor Great Park and Windsor Guildhall, a 15th-century building where there is a gruesome reminder of Eton’s past as well as magnificent views of the castle itself.

Start :- Queen Victoria’s Statue, Castle Hill, outside Windsor Castle
Finish :- Windsor and Eton Riverside.

Distance :- 2 ¾ miles (4.35 km).
Duration  :-1 ¾ hours

  • The 2013 hours train from Sunningdale, with a change at Staines arrives at Windsor Riverside at 2051 hours.
  • The 2323 hours train from Windsor Riverside arrives at Sunningdale at 0010 hours.

So, the walk is do able BUT leave no time to drink. So – Start earlier OR taxi home.

Steve has suggested we visit the Rose & Crown, Virginia Water for a meal. (With added comments that they have nice beer !)

See these two web sites:

Rose & Crowns own page

Here is a review site with prices

The suggestion is that we meet at 2000 hours (8 pm) travel there and eat, drink and be merry !

An evening in the Royal Oak

We’ve had a chat with Sailor Dave the occassional drinker, globe trotting tourist and sometime tour guide. Looking for a date next year we’ve plucked out (we’ve decided upon) May Day weekend. That’s Friday the 30th of April till Monday the 3rd. To remind you of the last trip visit -

THIS LINK (2008)

The car can take 5 + Dave driving. At present we’ve pencilled in the following names.

  • Robert
  • Steve
  • Stuart (Our thoughts are with you)
  • Adam (I know you’re on holiday in France)
  • Doug

We can change the date BUT it has to be done VERY soon as Dave is going to book the accommodation in the next two or three days. (i.e. within the next 48 to 72 hours) Please therefor make observations here with haste !

Suggestions for Friday 25/9/2009

I’ve decided that I shall muse about Fridays.

Doug’s suggestion is that we go to Richmond for a drink this coming Friday.

This will mean leaving my house at 2020 hours to catch the 2043 train.

(It’s a £6-70 return fare)
